Vancouver Canucks 3 at Florida Panthers 4 – 2023-01-14 recap

It feels like I’m recapping the begin stages of a funeral here.

I watched (and tracked) this game before the Canucks fired Bruce Boudreau, but am recapping it afterward, which makes for an interesting post script and will make tracking the following week’s games a bit more interesting.

But, gee, there’s not a whole lot of interesting hockey happening in this stretch. I came into this season wanting to discuss the actual ins and outs of the game, as opposed to the off-ice drama. The Canucks have thwarted that, and (I’ll get to it) their handling of the Boudreau situation seeped into the on-ice narrative. It was midway through this game that Hockey Night in Canada reported that the Canucks were in on Rick Tocchet and possibly waiting for him to be allowed to quit his gig at TNT. We didn’t know at the time just how much of a circus this would become.

On the ice, as I said, there wasn’t much. The Canucks again failed to create much of anything off the rush. Ethan Bear had a terrible night handling the puck. JT Miller remained at wing and it’s increasingly unclear how the Canucks are going to handle him in the years ahead. Brock Boeser stayed on the top line and powerplay unit.
