St. Louis Blues 6 at Toronto Maple Leafs 5 (SO) – 2023-01-03 recap

All right, I’m back writing. Trust me when I say that I’ve had a lot of games tracked but not written up. I was just so far behind that I’d figured I’d do the hard part first, before realizing that the hard part is actually the writing.

Anyway, by the All-Star game, I’ll hopefully be back to updating this after every game. I thank you for your patience and understanding. It’s been a tough winter.

Looking at a game weeks in the future is difficult, even with detailed notes. I have the score down at 5-5 (I don’t track the shootouts). Back when I was with the Leafs R&D team, we had a running gag that the purpose of overtime was to avoid the shootout. The shootout sucks and stops all the fun. There’s nothing worse than the horn blowing at 65 minutes, because that’s usually around the time that things have broken down in overtime and teams are just exchanging 2-on-1s and breakaways.

Still, if I can remember this game, the Leafs were down by two goals and kept pulling to within one, before eventually getting a tying goal from Michael Bunting on the powerplay midway through the third. That was probably fun. I also have Toronto as being a much better team here, though it was probably score effects-induced.

So we may as well skip all this and get to the numbers, so I can write a few more recaps before sleeping (and hopefully getting rid of this darn cold once and for all).
